Ken Follett Explores Women’s Roles in History with Latest Novel
Renowned Welsh author Ken Follett has unveiled his latest novel, titled ‘Circle of Days’, which delves into the construction of one of history’s most enigmatic structures: Stonehenge. In an interview with the Times of India, Follett discusses how his portrayal of women in prominent roles mirrors the realities of life.
With over 198 million copies of his thirty-eight books sold across more than eighty countries and translated into forty languages, Follett has established himself as a leading figure in the realm of epic fiction. His newest work offers a deeply human narrative that seeks to provide an origin story for the selection, transport, and arrangement of the Sarsen stones at Stonehenge, located on the Salisbury Plain in the UK.
Follett’s fascination with Stonehenge began during his childhood. Years later, while crafting the novel, he conducted extensive research, consulting with experts including archaeologists to ensure authenticity. This commitment to historical accuracy is a hallmark of Follett’s writing, which often intertwines factual history with imaginative storytelling.
A distinctive feature of ‘Circle of Days’ is its focus on female characters. Follett notes, “I have given women more prominent roles in my books. I think it reflects real life.” This choice aligns with his broader aim to illuminate the often-overlooked contributions of women throughout history.
As with his previous works, Follett employs a rich tapestry of characters to drive the narrative. Yet, in this instance, the story’s central themes and perspectives are largely shaped by women, allowing for a fresh interpretation of historical events.
Readers can anticipate an engaging exploration of the human experience set against the backdrop of a monumental ancient mystery. Follett combines his deductive reasoning with the sparse evidence available from the Stone Age, infusing his narrative with both historical context and creative imagination.
For those interested in the intersection of history and storytelling, Follett’s ‘Circle of Days’ promises to be a compelling addition to his impressive body of work.
