Zelensky Seeks Peace Inspiration from Trump’s Gaza Agreement
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with former US President Donald Trump on Saturday, discussing the recent peace agreement in Gaza and expressing optimism that a similar initiative could help resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine. In a post on X, Zelensky characterized the call as “very positive and productive.” He congratulated Trump on his diplomatic success, stating, “If a war can be stopped in one region, then surely other wars can be stopped as well, including the Russian war.”
Zelensky took the opportunity to inform Trump about Russia’s recent assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, thanking him for his ongoing support. The leaders reportedly examined new strategies to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Zelensky emphasized that solid proposals were being considered, stating, “There are good options and solid ideas on how to truly strengthen us.” He pointedly remarked on the necessity for Moscow to engage in authentic diplomacy, adding, “This can be achieved through strength. Thank you, Mr. President!”
Trump’s announcement earlier in the week regarding the agreement between Israel and Hamas has been hailed by global leaders as a significant diplomatic breakthrough. This accord includes a ceasefire and the release of hostages, representing a pivotal moment in Middle Eastern negotiations.
The relationship between Zelensky and Trump has notably evolved since a tense public exchange at the White House in February. Following that incident, Trump has referred to Zelensky as a “nice guy” and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia, which escalated dramatically with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
In August, Zelensky visited Washington shortly after Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. During that visit, Trump reiterated America’s readiness to support European-led peace efforts in Ukraine, saying, “People are being killed, and we want to stop that.” He remained hopeful about a resolution, stating, “I would not say it’s not the end of the road. We have a good chance of doing it. It’s been almost four years now.”
Trump also indicated the possibility of a trilateral summit, suggesting a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin could be on the horizon, ahead of his proposed discussions with both leaders. However, just last month, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the Kremlin, stating he was “very disappointed” in President Putin and announced plans for new measures aimed at reducing casualties in the conflict.
Ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has consistently been emphasized as one of Trump’s foreign policy priorities, a theme he has maintained since his presidential campaign. As the situation in Ukraine remains critical, the dialogue between Zelensky and Trump underscores the ongoing international focus on achieving peace in the region.
