World Leaders Applaud Israel-Hamas Ceasefire and Hostage Deal

World leaders have reacted positively to the announcement of a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement between Israel and Hamas on October 9, 2023. This development is seen as a potential turning point in the ongoing conflict that has severely impacted Gaza for over two years. The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, emphasized the importance of securing a permanent ceasefire and called for all hostages to be released “in a dignified manner.”
Guterres urged all parties involved to seize this “momentous opportunity” to pave the way for a credible political solution. He highlighted the necessity of recognizing the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people and achieving a two-state solution that allows both Israelis and Palestinians to coexist peacefully.
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas expressed hope that the ceasefire deal would set the stage for a lasting political resolution, ultimately leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. In the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the tireless diplomatic efforts of mediators and called the agreement a “crucial first step.” He noted the profound relief this development brings to the hostages and families affected, urging for immediate implementation and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Regional Leaders Celebrate the Agreement
Egypt, which facilitated the indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, hailed the agreement as a “pivotal moment.” President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described it as a historic opportunity that not only concludes the chapter of war but also opens avenues for justice and stability in the region.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan expressed satisfaction with the ceasefire negotiations and reiterated his commitment to monitor the agreement’s implementation closely. Erdogan, a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, emphasized Turkey’s continued support until a sovereign Palestinian state is realized. He acknowledged the role of former U.S. President Donald Trump in encouraging the Israeli government to pursue the ceasefire.
Saudi Arabia also commended Trump’s involvement, stating that it hopes the agreement will alleviate humanitarian suffering in Gaza and lead to a full Israeli withdrawal, ultimately fostering a just peace based on the two-state solution.
International Reactions and Calls for Action
European leaders also celebrated the ceasefire agreement. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, alongside Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, praised the diplomatic efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, viewing the deal as a potential pathway to lasting peace. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas referred to the agreement as “a significant breakthrough.”
French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France’s readiness to assist in ending the conflict, asserting that the agreement should mark the beginning of a political resolution based on the two-state solution. France is set to host discussions among foreign ministers from Arab and European nations to address support for the Palestinian people following the cessation of hostilities.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, emphasized the need for immediate humanitarian support for civilians. Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris echoed these sentiments, stating that the deal could lead to an end to the “unconscionable human suffering” experienced in the region.
In Asia, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, expressed hope for a “permanent and comprehensive” ceasefire in Gaza, reiterating China’s stance that Palestinians should govern their own territory.
As the world watches closely, the success of this ceasefire agreement will depend on the commitment of all parties to implement its terms and work towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the long-standing conflict.
