Man Dies in Police Custody After Arrest in Bihar’s Vaishali

A man arrested in connection with an attack on security personnel has died in a government hospital in Vaishali district, Bihar. The deceased, identified as Mohammad Nasir, was taken to the hospital after experiencing health issues while in police custody.
The incident began on September 5, 2023, when police apprehended Nasir along with four others for allegedly attacking officers in the Raja Pakar locality. This violence reportedly stemmed from a dispute involving an ice cream vendor, leading to injuries among at least four police personnel, including a female constable. The situation escalated when a mob attacked the police, damaging several vehicles.
According to Lalit Mohan Sharma, the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Vaishali, Nasir was placed in the lockup at Mahua police station following his arrest. On September 7, he complained of uneasiness, prompting immediate medical attention. He was transported to the nearest government hospital, where he succumbed to his condition.
In light of the incident, a magisterial inquiry has been initiated, with all necessary procedures being followed as per the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Additional police forces have been deployed in the Raja Pakar area to ensure law and order is maintained. “The situation is completely under control,” stated SP Sharma.
This tragic event raises questions about the treatment of individuals in police custody and the oversight mechanisms in place to protect their rights. As investigations continue, authorities aim to address any potential lapses in protocol that may have contributed to this unfortunate outcome.
