Protest Erupts Over Waterlogging Crisis in Sonepat Underpass

Frustration culminated in a protest in Sonepat on October 15, 2023, as local officials expressed their anger over severe waterlogging at an underpass. The demonstration was led by Sanjay Badwasnia, a member of the Zila Parishad, alongside Jagmal, a representative of the Sarpanch from Hullaheri village. The protesters made their way into the underpass, which was inundated with approximately 15 feet of water, utilizing swimming tubes to draw attention to the dire situation.
The protest stemmed from the failure to address waterlogging issues and the subsequent loss of crops on around 200 acres of farmland, primarily attributed to the lack of timely drain maintenance. Badwasnia criticized the district administration for its “lethargic attitude” in addressing these pressing problems, claiming that farmers’ concerns were being overlooked. He noted that no effective measures had been taken to alleviate the waterlogging, emphasizing the urgency of cleaning the drain to prevent further agricultural damage.
According to Badwasnia, the negligence has led to significant crop losses, threatening the livelihoods of local farmers. He stated, “The district administration has ignored the genuine problems faced by farmers, and as a result, their crops are suffering.” He pointed out that improper drainage maintenance has caused substantial flooding, putting both agriculture and public safety at risk.
The protest also highlighted the dangers posed by the standing water, with Badwasnia alleging that multiple accidents have occurred due to the hazardous conditions. Vehicles have been reported as getting stuck in the waterlogged underpass, raising safety concerns for commuters.
In response to the ongoing crisis, the Zila Parishad member called for immediate compensation for impacted farmers, insisting that the administration prioritize their needs. He urged local authorities to take decisive action to resolve the issues rather than allowing them to persist, further endangering both agricultural productivity and public safety.
As the protest unfolded, it served as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by rural communities when local governance fails to address essential infrastructure needs. The demands of the protesting officials reflect a growing frustration with administrative inaction, and the situation in Sonepat underscores the need for timely interventions to support affected farmers and ensure safe travel conditions for all residents.
