Odisha Braces for Week of Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

Severe weather conditions are set to impact several regions in Odisha, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from September 7 to 13. The ongoing monsoon activity, bolstered by an upper air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent areas, is driving this intense weather pattern.
In the next 24 hours, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 40 km/h may occur in districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Balangir. A yellow warning has been issued for these areas, indicating a significant risk of localized flooding and adverse weather conditions.
As the week progresses, the IMD has issued a series of warnings for various districts. On September 8 and 9, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to impact Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati. Similar conditions are anticipated in districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and others, where gusty winds may also accompany the storms.
The weather is projected to remain unstable throughout the week. From September 9 to 10, thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 30-40 km/h could affect multiple regions, including Deogarh, Angul, and Mayurbhanj. On September 10 and 11, Koraput and Malkangiri are again highlighted with a yellow warning, reflecting the persistent threat of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
On September 11 and 12, an orange alert has been issued for Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, signaling the likelihood of very heavy rainfall. Yellow warnings continue for several districts, emphasizing the broad impact of the weather event across Odisha.
Finally, on September 12 and 13, another orange warning is expected for Rayagada and Koraput, while yellow warnings will remain in effect for Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, and Ganjam. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the weather system develops.
The ongoing situation necessitates vigilance, particularly for those in vulnerable areas. The IMD continues to monitor conditions closely and will provide updates as needed.
