Vacherot Triumphs Over Cousin Rinderknech to Claim Shanghai Masters Title

Valentin Vacherot made history on October 15, 2023, by defeating his cousin Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the Shanghai Masters. This victory marks Vacherot’s first ATP title and establishes him as the lowest-ranked champion in ATP Masters 1000 history, having entered the tournament ranked 204th in the world. The 26-year-old from Monaco’s remarkable journey included a stunning semifinal win over 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Vacherot’s path to the final included defeating some formidable opponents. He faced Rinderknech, who reached the final after overcoming four-time major finalist Daniil Medvedev in a gripping semifinal. The match not only showcased the talent of both players but also highlighted a unique family rivalry, as they had never faced each other on the professional tour before.
In the final, Vacherot displayed exceptional skill, particularly in the decisive third set. He began with an early break and demonstrated powerful serving, achieving three consecutive love holds. At one point, he won 15 straight points before Rinderknech managed to reclaim a point with an unforced error. The intensity heightened when Rinderknech, facing match point while trailing 15-40, saved one but ultimately succumbed to a blistering forehand winner from Vacherot.
The emotional moment following the victory was palpable. Vacherot held his face in disbelief before embracing his cousin at the net. He then rushed to his team box to share a heartfelt hug with his coach, Benjamin Balleret, who is also his half-brother. Balleret, a former professional player, famously faced tennis legend Roger Federer in the early rounds of the Monte Carlo Masters in 2006.
As the match unfolded, Federer was present in the Shanghai crowd, watching with interest as Rinderknech secured the first set with an ace. Rinderknech’s performance remained competitive, even after taking a three-minute medical timeout for treatment on his back and shoulder. However, Vacherot maintained his momentum, ultimately sealing the match and his place in history.
This victory not only represents a personal milestone for Vacherot but also a significant achievement for Monaco, as he becomes the first player from the Principality to win an ATP Masters 1000 title. Vacherot’s victory serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, demonstrating that determination and talent can lead to remarkable achievements, regardless of ranking or reputation.
