South Africa’s Lower Order Thrives Against Pakistan in Rawalpindi

South Africa’s lower-order batsmen staged a remarkable recovery against Pakistan, taking a commanding 71-run first-innings lead on the third day of the second Test in Rawalpindi. A stunning partnership between Senuran Muthusamy and Kagiso Rabada turned the tide in favor of the visitors after they found themselves in trouble at 210 for 7.
The day commenced with Pakistani debutant Asif Afridi achieving a five-wicket haul, making him the oldest player to accomplish this feat on his Test debut for Pakistan. Afridi struck early, dismissing Kyle Verreynne with a catch behind the stumps and later removing Tristan Stubbs for 76, as well as Simon Harmer, which left South Africa vulnerable.
With the score at 210 for 7 and still trailing by 48 runs, South Africa’s situation appeared dire. However, Muthusamy’s composed innings of 89 provided the stability needed for a comeback. He formed a 71-run partnership with Keshav Maharaj and a remarkable 98-run stand with Rabada, marking only the second instance in Test history where both the ninth and tenth wickets contributed fifty-plus runs, the first being in 1998.
As the innings progressed, Muthusamy and Maharaj faced the Pakistani attack with resilience, despite Maharaj’s moments of fortune, including being dropped and nearly stumped. Their collaboration held firm until Maharaj fell to Noman Ali, leaving South Africa still 27 runs behind.
Rabada then ignited a fierce counterattack, showcasing his batting prowess with an aggressive display. He struck consecutive boundaries off Shaheen Shah Afridi and sent the ball soaring over long-on for six. His explosive innings of 71, achieved off just 38 balls, included a deft cut for a boundary and further sixes, helping South Africa to a respectable total.
By the time stumps were called, Pakistan faced an uphill battle at 94 for 4, effectively placing them at a disadvantage. The dramatic swing in momentum not only highlighted South Africa’s resilience but also placed significant pressure on the Pakistani side as they look to recover in the final day of the Test match.
This thrilling contest continues to unfold, with South Africa firmly in the driving seat as they aim for victory in this crucial match.
