Jets Name Justin Fields as Starting Quarterback for Week 8
The New York Jets have announced that Justin Fields will start as quarterback in their Week 8 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on October 29, 2023. This decision comes just six days after Fields was benched during a loss to the Carolina Panthers, leaving the Jets as the only winless team in the NFL with a record of 0-7.
In last week’s game, Fields was replaced by Tyrod Taylor, who attempted to inject some momentum into the struggling team. Despite Taylor’s efforts, the Jets could not overcome the Panthers, leading to continued scrutiny of their performance. Coach Aaron Glenn had previously refrained from confirming the starting quarterback for the upcoming game, but with no viable alternatives, the Jets have opted to return to Fields.
NFL insider Adam Schefter confirmed on Saturday that Fields would be facing off against veteran quarterback Joe Flacco and the Bengals. As the team prepares for this crucial game, many fans have speculated about the implications of this decision, especially considering the Jets’ ongoing struggles.
The reaction from Jets owner Woody Johnson has been particularly noteworthy. Following the Week 7 defeat, Johnson expressed strong criticism of Fields. This raised questions about how he would respond to Fields’ reinstatement as the starter. Some fans are concerned that Fields’ career may be on the line during this matchup, urging the Jets to consider trading for Shedeur Sanders to improve their prospects.
Fields himself has addressed Johnson’s previous remarks, stating that he would not confront the owner about his opinions. He acknowledged that everyone is entitled to their viewpoint and emphasized his focus on improving his game rather than dwelling on criticism.
In his six appearances this season, Fields has completed 86 of 135 pass attempts for 845 yards and four touchdowns, with zero interceptions. Additionally, he has rushed 42 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Despite these individual statistics, the team has yet to secure a victory, contributing to the mounting pressure surrounding the franchise.
As the season progresses, the Jets will be looking to turn things around against the Bengals. The outcome of this game could significantly impact Fields’ future with the team and the overall direction of the Jets as they seek to improve from their winless start.
