Abhishek Sharma Urged to Refine Aggressive Play Ahead of World T20
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has cautioned rising star Abhishek Sharma to refine his aggressive batting approach as the Indian team prepares for the upcoming World T20 tournament. Sharma, who recently topped the T20I rankings with 925 rating points, scored 163 runs in the recently concluded series against Australia, showcasing his potential as a formidable opening batter.
India’s T20I team has demonstrated remarkable prowess, remaining unbeaten in the Asia Cup earlier this year and claiming a series victory against Australia on their home turf. As the World T20 approaches in February 2026, the team, led by Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir, is focusing on refining their strategies to enhance their chances of success.
Pathan highlighted Sharma’s current form, noting that the young left-hander has been instrumental in providing explosive starts. However, he expressed concern over Sharma’s tendency to adopt an overly aggressive stance, particularly in bilateral series. “Abhishek plays fearless cricket, which is commendable, but World Cup scenarios are different. Teams come prepared,” Pathan stated. He emphasized that consistently stepping out to hit bowlers on the first ball could make Sharma predictable, urging him to pick and choose his deliveries wisely.
Abhishek Sharma has made a significant impact since his debut, participating in 29 T20I matches and amassing 1,012 runs at an average of 37.48 with an impressive strike rate of 189.52. His ability to change the dynamics of a game has made him a key player for India, but as Pathan pointed out, careful consideration of shot selection will be crucial in high-stakes matches.
With the World T20 drawing closer, Sharma’s development as a player and his ability to adapt his game will be under scrutiny. The Indian team, bolstered by the guidance of former players like Yuvraj Singh, who serves as Sharma’s coach, is expected to address these concerns in training sessions leading up to the tournament.
As preparations intensify, all eyes will be on how Sharma evolves his playing style to meet the challenges presented by the world’s best teams in the T20 format. The upcoming months will be pivotal for both Sharma and the Indian team as they aim to secure their place at the top of international T20 cricket.
