A researcher has announced the discovery of a dinosaur fossil believed to be part of a three-horned Triceratops near the banks of the Sahansara River in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The fossil, identified as a nasal horn, is estimated to be between 35-40 million years old, according to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Mohammad Umar Saif, founder of the Natural History and Conservation Centre, discussed the significance of this find. He stated that the fossil was excavated recently and noted its close resemblance to other Triceratops fossils discovered globally. “While we cannot definitively say that it belongs to a Triceratops, its morphology, shape, and size are very similar,” Saif explained.

Significance of the Discovery

The Triceratops is a well-known dinosaur, typically associated with the Late Cretaceous period, which spanned from 100.5 million years ago to 66 million years ago. Saif highlighted the exceptional preservation of the fossil, which has transformed into sandstone due to heavy mineralization. This transformation occurred because the fossil remained buried in the foothills of the Himalayas for approximately 35 to 40 million years.

“This is a good discovery,” Saif remarked, emphasizing the fossil’s well-preserved condition. The Saharanpur area has attracted attention in recent years due to numerous fossil excavations, furthering interest among researchers in the region.

The excavation of this Triceratops fossil not only adds to the paleontological record in India but also highlights the ongoing significance of the Saharanpur district as a site for ancient discoveries. As researchers continue to study the fossil, its implications for understanding the prehistoric ecosystems of the region may become clearer, further enriching the scientific community’s knowledge of dinosaurs and their habitats.
