SLBC Tunnel Work to Restart by December 2027, Says Minister

The government of Telangana plans to resume work on the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel by December 2027, according to Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy. He announced that tunneling operations would restart soon, adhering to previously revised cost estimates, following the conclusion of the current monsoon season. This project has been under scrutiny since work was halted after a tragic roof collapse in February 2023, which resulted in the loss of eight lives.
The SLBC tunnel is considered vital for the irrigation infrastructure of southern Telangana. It connects the Srisailam reservoir to Nalgonda district via a 43-kilometre tunnel designed to supply Krishna water for both irrigation and drinking purposes, particularly in drought-prone areas. Reddy emphasized the project’s significance, calling it a “lifeline project for the southern districts.”
Survey and Safety Measures
To ensure the success of the resumed work, the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) will conduct a helicopter-borne aerial magnetic survey. This survey, expected to be completed by the end of the month, aims to map underground rock structures and facilitate necessary adjustments in tunnel alignment for enhanced safety during construction.
Reddy reassured reporters that the government is committed to avoiding any cost overruns and maintaining project timelines. The previous estimates will guide the financial planning as the project progresses. The completion of this infrastructure project is anticipated to bolster water supply in the region, addressing critical needs in agriculture and public health.
In summary, the government’s initiative to restart the SLBC tunnel work reflects its commitment to enhancing irrigation systems and water management in Telangana. The successful execution of this project will be crucial for supporting local communities and improving their resilience against water scarcity.
