Russia’s Rosatom Completes Key Stage for Powerful Nuclear Icebreaker

Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has completed a crucial milestone in the production of the Rossiya, the world’s most powerful nuclear icebreaker. The company announced that the control assembly of the second RITM-400 reactor unit has been finalized, marking the last step in creating the vessel’s nuclear core. This assembly also ensures that all components are compatible before being delivered to the shipyard for installation.
The Rossiya will be equipped with two RITM-400 reactors, designed for high efficiency and power. The first reactor was completed in May 2023. These reactors can break through ice up to 4 meters (13 feet) thick, which significantly enhances the icebreaker’s operational capabilities. The RITM-400 reactors are named after legendary heroes from Russian folklore, Ilya Muromets and Dobrynya Nikitich, further emphasizing their significance in Russian culture.
Enhancing Arctic Navigation
The completion of the control assembly is a significant step towards enabling year-round navigation along the eastern sector of the Northern Sea Route. This strategic maritime corridor is vital for advancing Arctic development and facilitating shipping routes that could support economic growth in the region.
