IIT Madras Enhances Focus on Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced a renewed emphasis on fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. This commitment follows the institute’s commendable performance in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, where it secured the top position in four categories and ranked second among research institutions. Director V. Kamakoti shared these developments with journalists on Friday, highlighting the institute’s strategic direction.

In pursuit of this goal, IIT Madras has established the new School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. This initiative aims to support startups focusing on deep technology—innovations that aim to solve significant societal challenges. “We are committed to creating an ecosystem that nurtures startups and encourages technological advancements,” said Mr. Kamakoti. The institute plans to leverage patents and startups as key instruments for driving its innovation agenda.

Last year, IIT Madras played a pivotal role in filing 417 patents and supporting 113 startups. According to Kamakoti, ownership of technology is a priority; he stated, “The citizens of this country should own the patent for such technologies. We can then convert them into socially relevant schemes through startups.” This vision underscores the institute’s focus on making technology accessible and beneficial to society at large.

Advancing Research and Educational Initiatives

In response to inquiries about enhancing research capabilities, Kamakoti emphasized the need for translational research. This approach prioritizes filing patents before launching technologies for commercial use, ensuring that innovations are protected and viable. The institute is also aligning its efforts with the Union government’s initiative to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education. As part of this effort, IIT Madras plans to expand its Vidya Shakti programme, which aims to establish at least 50,000 rural interaction centres. These centres will provide school children with access to artificial intelligence tools and immersive technologies like virtual reality, enhancing their foundational knowledge.

Additionally, IIT Madras will broaden its academic offerings by introducing new courses in Aeronautical Studies, Economics, and Mathematics. This expansion will complement its existing Bachelor of Science courses in Data Science and Electronics Systems, which currently serve approximately 49,000 students.

The developments at IIT Madras reflect a proactive approach to education and innovation, positioning the institute as a leader in fostering technological advancements that resonate with societal needs. As it embarks on this ambitious journey, the institute aims to empower the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
