ASI Showcases Ancient Copper Plate Charters During PM’s Visit

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will exhibit 21 ancient copper plate charters at the Srisailam temple during Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s visit on October 16, 2023. These artifacts were discovered at Ghantamatham and have undergone comprehensive chemical cleaning by the ASI’s science branch in Hyderabad. In conjunction with the exhibition, a book titled ‘Srisailam Nutana Tamra Sasanalu’ (New Copper Plates from Srisailam) will also be launched, highlighting the historical and cultural significance of these charters.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his appreciation for the ASI’s efforts in a letter to K Munirathnam Reddy, the ASI director of epigraphy. He acknowledged the department’s dedication to preserving and documenting these vital pieces of history. The publication of the accompanying book is expected to enhance public understanding of the charters’ importance.
The ASI director indicated that the exhibition will not only showcase the copper plate charters but also serve as a platform to educate visitors about their historical context. “The ASI is arranging an exhibition of 21 sets of copper plate charters at the Srisailam temple after their chemical cleaning, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit,” Reddy stated. “We are pleased to receive a letter of appreciation from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for our work on the copper plates and for bringing out a book highlighting their historical significance.”
The copper plates are considered significant artifacts that provide insight into the region’s ancient culture and governance. The exhibition aims to attract scholars, historians, and the general public, fostering a greater appreciation for India’s rich heritage. As preparations continue for the event, the collaboration between the ASI and the state government underscores a shared commitment to preserving history for future generations.
