Tensions Rise in Assam After Mysterious Death of Zubeen Garg

A wave of unrest is developing in Assam following the mysterious death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that certain groups are attempting to exploit this tragedy to incite violence and unrest in the region. The comments came after violent protests erupted in Baksa district on October 15, where people gathered to demand justice for the beloved artist.
Violent Protests Erupt in Baksa
The incident in Baksa began as a peaceful demonstration outside the newly constructed jail housing the prime accused in Garg’s death, Sidharth Sharma, and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, among others. However, tensions escalated as protesters clashed with police, resulting in stone-throwing and the arson of several police and media vehicles. Authorities responded with lathi charges and blank fire to restore order.
In the aftermath, multiple injuries were reported among police officers, journalists, and demonstrators. To maintain control, the administration imposed restrictions under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code and limited internet access in the district.
According to local reports, the unrest was fueled by statements from political figures. Gaurav Gogoi, state Congress president, had warned that followers of Zubeen Garg were growing increasingly impatient, which could lead to further violence.
Government Response and Ongoing Investigation
Chief Minister Sarma expressed concern that the current situation could regress Assam’s societal stability, recalling the aftermath of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests. He criticized political parties, particularly the Congress, for allegedly inciting the public and using Garg’s death as a political tool ahead of the upcoming 2026 Assam elections.
“We need to follow the judicial procedure, but there are leaders trying to make this a political issue,”
Sarma said. He urged the populace not to succumb to the provocations of those seeking to exploit the situation. The Chief Minister assured residents that the state’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) is diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death, which occurred on September 19, 2023, while he was swimming in Singapore.
As of now, seven individuals have been arrested, and over fifty have been questioned by the SIT as investigations continue. The Chief Minister has also consulted with the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other officials to discuss the ongoing legal proceedings and the implications for state security.
The tragic event has left a significant impact on the community, with many expressing outrage and sorrow over the singer’s untimely passing. As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Zubeen Garg while maintaining peace and order in Assam.
