Kapurthala Woman Missing in Pakistan After Religious Celebration

A 50-year-old woman from Kapurthala, India, has been reported missing in Pakistan following the celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti at Nankana Sahib. Sarabjit Kaur, a resident of Amanipur village, was part of a group of 1,931 pilgrims that entered Pakistan through the Attari-Wagah joint checkpost on November 4.

Sarabjit was expected to return alongside the other members of her group after the festivities. However, when she did not rejoin the group, local authorities were alerted. Dheerendra Verma, the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Sultanpur Lodhi, confirmed that an investigation has been initiated into her disappearance.

Verma stated, “We, along with central intelligence and security agencies, are inquiring about the background of the woman and her family.” According to reports, Sarabjit was residing in Kapurthala with her two sons, while her husband, Karnail Singh, has been living in England for the past 15 years.

Police have noted that Sarabjit Kaur has a documented criminal history, with three cases related to cheating and fraud registered against her at both the Kotfatta police station in Bathinda and the Kapurthala city police station.

An official further revealed that her passport listed a permanent address in Malout, Muktsar district, and included her father’s name. Notably, she did not provide her citizenship or passport number on the immigration form submitted for her Pakistan visa.

In addition, authorities indicated that both of Sarabjit’s sons also possess a criminal background, with a total of ten First Information Reports (FIRs) filed against them for various offenses, including fraud and assault, at multiple police stations.

As the investigation continues, the local police, along with central security agencies, are working to uncover more information regarding Sarabjit Kaur’s disappearance and her family’s circumstances. The case raises questions about the safety of pilgrims traveling across the border for religious events and the complexities involved in cross-border movements during such occasions.
