Congress Faces Leadership Dilemma in Karnataka, Eyes Change

Karnataka’s political landscape is marked by a significant power struggle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Both leaders have indicated their willingness to travel to Delhi to meet with the Congress high command, including senior party figures like Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, should they be called in for discussions regarding the ongoing leadership dispute.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has stated that a meeting will be arranged to address the tensions between the two leaders. The conflict arises from an alleged verbal agreement suggesting that they would share the Chief Minister’s position for 2.5 years each. Having completed his term, Siddaramaiah now faces pressure from Shivakumar’s supporters, who are eager for a leadership change that many believe could occur sometime next year.

Concerns Over Leadership Change

Siddaramaiah’s position as the only Chief Minister from the OBC community is pivotal, especially as Karnataka undertakes a caste census. Replacing him with Shivakumar, who represents the Vokkaliga community, could jeopardize the party’s social justice narrative as elections approach in neighboring states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Siddaramaiah, a prominent Kuruba leader, enjoys substantial support within the party, and his leadership is crucial for maintaining the coalition of minorities, backward classes, and Dalits known as the Ahinda coalition. Party insiders express concern that although Siddaramaiah’s backing remains strong, Shivakumar’s influence over the Vokkaliga community may not be as solid. The Vokkaligas are divided between the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), complicating Shivakumar’s potential rise.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, a Vokkaliga seer has publicly called for Shivakumar to be appointed as Chief Minister. The pressure is mounting for a leadership transition, with many party leaders acknowledging that Siddaramaiah’s age—he will turn 80 before the next Assembly election in 2028—necessitates consideration of a successor.

Leadership Challenges Ahead

The Congress party has faced difficulties in navigating leadership disputes in the past, as seen in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. As the situation evolves, it is anticipated that Shivakumar will continue to advocate for a change in leadership. Nevertheless, the Congress high command is likely to be cautious in any decision to replace Siddaramaiah, especially as he remains adamant about not stepping down.
