Over 50,000 Devotees Welcome Mahasu Maharaj at Historic Ceremony
Devotion reached new heights on the night of March 16, 2024, as more than 50,000 devotees gathered at the Himachal Pradesh–Uttarakhand border in Meenas to welcome the sacred palanquin of Chhatradhari Chalda Mahasu Maharaj. This significant occasion marked a historic moment in the spiritual landscape of the region, celebrating the revered deity’s entry into Sirmaur district. The atmosphere was electrifying, with chants of “Jai Chalda Mahasu Maharaj” echoing across the hills as the deity crossed from Uttarakhand’s Jaunsar Bawar.
The scene was vibrant, illuminated by mobile phone torches that created a sea of lights against the night sky. Devotees danced and sang, their unity transforming the border area into a living testament of faith. As the procession moved forward, vehicle congestion on National Highway 707 halted traffic for hours, yet many attendees remained undeterred, having waited all night for this momentous arrival.
After the ceremonial welcome, the procession continued to Drabil, the designated halt, arriving around 03:00. Community kitchens were prepared to serve food and prasad, ensuring that every devotee was catered for during the night. The atmosphere remained deeply spiritual with participants swaying to devotional songs, fostering a sense of community and celebration.
To ensure safety and order, the district administration deployed approximately 200 police personnel at strategic points. Shillai Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jaspal Singh and Paonta Sahib Deputy Superintendent of Police Manvendra Singh Thakur were present, overseeing crowd management throughout the event. Harshwardhan Chauhan, the Industries, Parliamentary Affairs, Employment and Labour Minister, actively engaged with local officials and residents, taking feedback on the arrangements while walking alongside the palanquin.
On the morning following the welcome, Chauhan visited Drabil with his family to offer prayers and pay respects to the sacred procession. The spiritual journey is set to continue into the evening as Chalda Mahasu Maharaj departs for Pashmi village, where a newly constructed temple awaits the deity. Organizers expect nearly 50,000 devotees to accompany the palanquin on foot, reflecting the extensive preparations made for this significant event.
Religious scholars and local elders have labeled this occasion as historically significant, noting that it marks the first time Chalda Mahasu Maharaj has crossed the Tons river into Himachal Pradesh from Uttarakhand. This pilgrimage bestows upon Sirmaur district the unique opportunity to serve the revered deity for the first time, instilling a sense of pride and devotion in the local populace.
The belief surrounding Chalda Mahasu Maharaj is that wherever he travels, prosperity and well-being flourish. This conviction has drawn countless individuals from Shillai and the surrounding Sirmaur district to witness the divine arrival and seek blessings. The historic event is expected to leave a lasting imprint on the spiritual consciousness of the region, uniting devotees in a shared moment of faith and celebration.
