MAHE Manipal Hosts Successful Mental Health Awareness Run 2025

Udupi witnessed a significant event on October 12, 2025, as the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) hosted the Mental Health Awareness Run 2025. Organized by the Department of Student Affairs in collaboration with the KMC Sports Committee and the FIT VIB KMC, this 5K run marked the conclusion of MAHE’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which ran from October 5 to 11.
The event attracted over 1,000 participants, including students, staff, families, and local school students, demonstrating a unified commitment to mental well-being. Distinguished guests included Swaroopa T K IAS, the deputy commissioner of Udupi District, who served as the chief guest, and Hariram Shankar, IPS, the superintendent of police, as the guest of honor. Other notable attendees were Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor, Dr Narayana Sabhahit, pro vice-chancellor (Technology & Science), and Dr Geetha Maiya, director of the Department of Student Affairs.
Promoting Mental Health Resilience
The theme for this year’s event, “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” highlighted the importance of personal mental resilience and offering support to others. Dr H S Ballal emphasized the integral role of mental health in academic success, stating, “Mental health is not separate from academic excellence—it is fundamental to it.” This initiative reflects MAHE’s commitment to nurturing individuals who can thrive both academically and personally.
Dr Geetha Maiya noted the significance of the run, remarking, “This run is more than an event; it is a statement that mental well-being matters, that we stand together, and that seeking support is a sign of strength.” Her sentiments resonate with MAHE’s goal of fostering a culture where individuals feel empowered to prioritize their mental health.
Participants competed in various categories, with prizes awarded to winners in both male and female divisions. Cash prizes of Rs 5,000 for first place, Rs 3,000 for second, and Rs 2,000 for third were available. All finishers received medals, and registered participants were given event t-shirts and refreshments. Additionally, local high school students had the opportunity to participate in a ‘Free Run’ category, receiving medals for their enthusiasm.
Strengthening Community and Awareness
The Mental Health Awareness Run 2025 also featured cultural performances by MAHE students, enriching the event’s atmosphere. This initiative stands as a flagship representation of MAHE’s dedication to integrating mental wellness into education and community engagement. Through partnerships with financial institutions such as Federal Bank, Karnataka Bank, Canara Bank, and Bank of Baroda, the university effectively promoted mental health literacy throughout the Udupi region.
This event did more than just raise awareness; it celebrated the collective effort to address mental health issues. MAHE’s ongoing initiatives exemplify its vision of education that not only prioritizes academic rigor but also focuses on holistic well-being. As the university continues to lead in fostering community engagement and personal resilience, the Mental Health Awareness Run serves as a powerful testament to its mission of transforming lives and empowering future generations.
