On October 6, 2023, at the Smt. Allam Sumangalamma Memorial Women’s College in Ballari, Rajesh N. Hosamane, Senior Civil Judge and Member Secretary of the Ballari District Legal Services Authority, emphasized the importance of social connections in overcoming mental stress. His remarks came during the inauguration of a programme organized to commemorate World Mental Health Day.

The event was a collaborative effort involving multiple organizations, including the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Legal Services Authority, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Information and Public Relations, and the District Mental Health Programme Unit. In his inaugural address, Mr. Hosamane highlighted how the human brain tends to suppress unpleasant memories to maintain emotional balance. Yet, he acknowledged that modern work pressures and fast-paced lifestyles contribute significantly to increased mental stress.

Encouraging Healthy Practices

“To preserve mental health, engaging in healthy activities such as yoga, meditation, and pranayama is essential,” Mr. Hosamane stated. He emphasized that mental stress should not be viewed as a weakness but as a condition that can be effectively managed. He further noted that open communication with friends and family is crucial in alleviating emotional burdens.

Yalla Ramesh Babu, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer, echoed this sentiment, stating that discussing personal challenges with loved ones can aid individuals in overcoming stress. N. Basareddy, the District Surgeon, stressed the importance of impulse control and seeking timely treatment for those experiencing mental health issues. He pointed out that while mental illness can have hereditary roots, responsible care and therapy can lead to full recovery.

During a special lecture, Nanda Kishore, a psychiatrist, insisted that mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. He cautioned that smartphones are contributing to stress levels in both workplaces and homes. “Taking a break from mobile phones for at least one day a week can significantly improve mental health,” he suggested.

Addressing Mental Health in India

Veerendra Kumar, the District Mental Health Programme Officer, revealed that nearly 25% to 30% of India’s population suffers from some form of mental disorder, with the highest prevalence found among individuals aged 15 to 25. To provide timely psychological support, a 24/7 national helpline, 14416, has been launched to assist those in need.

The Principal of the college, Doopam Satish, remarked on the vital role of mental well-being in enhancing focus, reducing stress, and creating career opportunities in mental health fields. Among the attendees of the event were Poornima, the District Family Welfare Programme Implementation Officer; Khursheed Begum, the District Health Education Officer; Syeda K. Tanveer Fatima, the Coordinator of Smt. Allam Sumangalamma Memorial Women’s College; as well as teaching and non-teaching staff, students, and health department personnel.

This event serves as a reminder of the growing need for mental health awareness and support in the community, emphasizing the importance of social connections in fostering better mental health outcomes.
