Joe Biden Undergoes Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer Treatment

Former US President Joe Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy as part of his treatment for prostate cancer, according to a statement from his spokesperson. The spokesperson confirmed that Biden, who will turn 83 years old next month, began this treatment a few weeks ago, although the duration of the therapy has not been disclosed.
In May, Biden’s office revealed that he was diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. Following the diagnosis, Biden expressed optimism about his condition, stating, “The expectation is we’re going to be able to beat this.” He noted that the cancer had not penetrated any vital organs and emphasized that he is feeling well. Alongside radiation, Biden has started a hormone treatment regimen as part of his overall care strategy.
Understanding Prostate Cancer Treatment
Prostate cancer is among the most prevalent cancers impacting men globally. Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt, a urologist and robotic surgeon at Orlando Health, explained that as men age, the likelihood of developing small cancerous cells increases significantly. Biden’s Gleason score, reported to be 9, is classified as the most aggressive type of prostate cancer.
Dr. Benjamin Davies, a professor of urologic oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, highlighted the seriousness of cancer that has spread to the bones. He stated that while the condition is “very serious and not curable,” advancements in hormonal and chemotherapy treatments have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in extending patient lifespans. He emphasized that even those diagnosed with high-risk prostate cancer can maintain a good quality of life if treated effectively.
Biden has not only faced prostate cancer; last month, he underwent Mohs surgery to remove skin cancer lesions. This procedure involves excising thin layers of skin, which are then microscopically examined to ensure the removal of all cancerous cells. In 2023, during his presidency, he had a lesion from his chest removed, which later tested positive for basal cell carcinoma, the most common and generally treatable form of skin cancer. At that time, White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor reported that all cancerous tissue was successfully excised, and Biden is scheduled for ongoing dermatological evaluations.
As Biden navigates these health challenges, his treatment plans reflect a broader understanding of prostate cancer management and the importance of early intervention and continuous monitoring.
