Medical and Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav urged collective action to establish a mentally healthy society during a World Mental Health Day event in Vijayawada on October 10, 2023. The gathering, hosted by Indlas Hospitals at the IMA Hall, emphasized the need for quality mental health services, particularly through the government-supported Tele Manas initiative.

Speaking at the event, Yadav highlighted that Andhra Pradesh stands out as one of the few states collaborating with the central government to provide mental health services. Accompanied by NTR district collector Dr. G. Lakshmisha and Dr. Indla Ramasubba Reddy, the minister launched a Mental Health Walk and presented a booklet titled “Mental Health Care in Emergencies.”

Yadav pointed to rising mental health issues attributed to increasing stress levels. He referenced reports from the World Health Organization (WHO), indicating that approximately 970 million people globally suffer from mental disorders, resulting in a staggering annual loss of $1 trillion to health systems worldwide. The minister specifically mentioned that between 14% and 24% of tribal women experience antenatal anxiety disorders, underscoring the critical need for early detection and treatment.

The Tele Manas initiative offers unique tele-mental health services, with mental health centres established across all districts in Andhra Pradesh. Yadav announced that the Visakhapatnam Mental Hospital has been upgraded to a Centre of Excellence, one of 27 such institutions in India. He commended Dr. Ramasubba Reddy for his significant contributions to improving mental health care in the region.

Dr. Lakshmisha emphasized that a healthy Andhra Pradesh is essential for achieving the vision of a prosperous state, referred to as Swarna Andhra. He also highlighted initiatives like Yoga Andhra Month, which aims to promote mental well-being across the community.

The event saw participation from various stakeholders, including Dr. Vishal, director of Indla Hospitals, along with numerous doctors and students, all united in the commitment to advancing mental health awareness and services in the region.

As Andhra Pradesh takes significant steps towards enhancing mental health care, the collaboration between government initiatives and community involvement presents a hopeful outlook for a mentally healthier society.
