Singers Unite in Athani to Combat Drug Abuse Through Music
On the evening of October 13, 2025, more than 25 singers, both amateur and professional, gathered at Athani, near Nedumbassery, to participate in a unique musical event aimed at combating the rising drug menace in the region. Organised by the Ernakulam Rural Police, this initiative is part of a broader effort to foster a community resistance against increasing incidents of drug-related activities.
The event, which features karaoke sessions from 17:00 to 21:30 until October 18, aims to raise awareness about drug abuse and its consequences. Police officers from the Aluva sub-division and the Ernakulam rural district are actively involved in the initiative, encouraging local community members to take part. Attendees can register on-site to join in the singing.
A sound system has been set up at the Athani Airport Signal Junction, where the event will take place. Each day of the programme will feature esteemed guests, enhancing the visibility of the campaign. The event was inaugurated by District Police Chief M. Hemalatha, who stated, “The event is aimed at using the powers of music to free society from the influence of toxic substances.”
The programme also welcomed Joby John, a renowned playback singer, as the chief guest. He highlighted the importance of music in promoting social change. The keynote address was delivered by Deputy Superintendent of Police T.R. Rajesh, while Additional Superintendent of Police M. Krishnan and M.V. Sanil, the district secretary of the Police Officers Association, also shared their insights on the issue of drug abuse.
This initiative is not the first of its kind for the rural police. Recently, they organised a movie screening for migrant labourers in and around Perumbavoor to further educate the community about the dangers of drug use. Such events underscore the commitment of the local police to create a healthier and safer environment for all residents.
By fostering community engagement through music and awareness campaigns, the Ernakulam Rural Police aim to inspire collective action against the drug problem, demonstrating that the power of song can indeed uplift spirits and promote positive change.
