Automobile sales in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) experienced a moderate growth of 4.92 percent year-on-year in November 2025, despite a general slowdown in economic activity during the winter months. This growth follows a period of robust double-digit increases from May to October, indicating a consistent buying sentiment among consumers in the region.

As winter approaches, specifically with the coldest phase known as Chilai Kalan set to commence in the coming week, the slight increase in automobile sales reflects resilience in the local market. The growth rate in J&K is comparable to the national average, which saw an overall increase of 2 percent during the same period, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA).

Comparative Performance Across Regions

In contrast to J&K’s performance, neighboring states reported significant surges in automobile sales. Himachal Pradesh recorded a remarkable growth of 43.16 percent, while Punjab saw an impressive 57.78 percent increase in sales for November. Chandigarh also performed well, posting a growth rate of 35.80 percent. Conversely, Uttar Pradesh experienced a decline, with sales dropping by 5.91 percent.

Within J&K, the sales of passenger vehicles witnessed a strong increase of 36.05 percent, demonstrating the demand for personal transportation. However, the commercial vehicle segment faced challenges, experiencing a sharp decline of 7.19 percent compared to the previous November. The three-wheeler category also suffered, with sales decreasing by 10.02 percent.

Segment Trends and Insights

Despite the downturn in certain categories, the tractor segment showed positive momentum, achieving a year-on-year growth of 6.96 percent. This increase highlights a potential shift in consumer preference towards agricultural vehicles amid seasonal economic patterns.

The two-wheeler market, once a leader in sales driven by the popularity of gearless scooters, has seen a downturn, with retail sales declining by 8.48 percent in November. This decline raises questions about changing consumer behavior and market dynamics.

Overall, the automobile market in J&K reflects a complex landscape, where seasonal factors and regional economic conditions play pivotal roles in shaping sales trends. The data from FADA underscores the importance of understanding these dynamics as the territory navigates the winter months and prepares for the upcoming year.
