Congress-led UDF Vows to Fight Special Intensive Revision in Kerala

The Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, announced on September 13 that the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) will oppose the implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state. Satheesan characterized SIR as a strategy by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at undermining the integrity of elections in Kerala.
Satheesan expressed concerns that the implementation of SIR would result in the removal of numerous voters who have participated in elections for over two decades. He claimed that the BJP’s intention is to revert the voter list to its status from 2002, which he described as a significant regression in the democratic process.
Protests Expected Across Kerala
In his remarks, Satheesan highlighted the possibility of widespread protests in response to the SIR, drawing parallels to similar demonstrations that occurred in Bihar. “There will be strong protests against it across the state,” he stated, emphasizing the UDF’s commitment to mobilizing public opposition to the initiative.
The Election Commission has recently indicated that it will announce the timeline for the rollout of SIR on a national scale. This initiative includes a comprehensive cleanup of voter lists across various states, with the expectation that it will be implemented before the end of the year.
Officials noted that with five assembly elections, including one in Kerala, scheduled for next year, the all-India SIR could be initiated in the coming months, potentially affecting the electoral landscape in 2025.
As political tensions rise, the UDF’s strong stance against SIR may shape the discourse around electoral integrity and voter rights in Kerala, as the opposition seeks to protect the democratic process from what they perceive as disruptive tactics.
