Anil Desai Supports PM Modi’s Stance on Pakistan and Terrorism

On August 15, 2023, during his Independence Day speech, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made strong remarks about Pakistan’s role in terrorism, which received backing from Shiv Sena (UBT) Member of Parliament Anil Desai. Desai emphasized that peace cannot be achieved until Pakistan ceases its support for terrorism, stating, “It is absolutely correct because the way Pakistan has given a platform to terrorism, it is impossible to have any compromise there until their actions stop.”
These comments echoed PM Modi’s assertion at the historic Red Fort, where he declared that India has “set a new normal” in its approach to combating terrorism. Modi specifically referenced the recent success of Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror sites in Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahalgam attacks where innocent lives were lost.
Criticism of Cricket Board’s Engagement with Pakistan
While Desai supported the Prime Minister’s stance, party MLA Aaditya Thackeray took a different approach, criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-aligned Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) for planning to play against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup T20. Thackeray expressed his discontent on social media, stating, “It’ll be a real shame if the BCCI thinks it’s above what the PM said from the Red Fort today.” He further argued that the BCCI’s actions contradict the government’s efforts to address terrorism linked to Pakistan.
Thackeray highlighted the sacrifices of the Indian armed forces and emphasized that financial interests should not overshadow national security concerns. He pointed out that the BCCI’s decision seemed to disregard the Prime Minister’s warning that “blood and water cannot flow together.”
Details of Operation Sindoor
During his address, Prime Minister Modi commemorated the armed forces’ achievements in Operation Sindoor, which was a direct response to the Pahalgam attack that occurred on April 22, 2023. This incident involved terrorists targeting civilians based on their religion, a tragedy that provoked outrage across India and raised international concern.
“I am very proud that from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I am getting the opportunity to salute the heroes of Operation Sindoor. Our brave jawans punished the enemy beyond its imagination,” Modi stated, emphasizing the military’s decisive actions against terrorism.
The Prime Minister reiterated that the Indian government has provided the armed forces with a free hand to respond to threats, declaring that India will no longer tolerate “nuclear blackmail.” He stated, “If the enemy dares to commit any more misadventure, the Indian Armed Forces will give them a befitting reply.” Modi’s rhetoric aimed to underline a unified stance against terrorism and those who support it, marking a significant moment in India’s defense policy.
As the political landscape evolves, the implications of these statements on Indo-Pak relations and international cricket remain to be seen. The reactions from both Desai and Thackeray illustrate the divergent views within Indian politics regarding engagement with Pakistan amidst ongoing security concerns.
