The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, including Thane and Palghar, as heavy rainfall is forecasted over the upcoming Independence Day weekend. According to a weather bulletin released on August 13, 2025, significant rainfall is anticipated on August 16 and August 17.

An orange alert has also been issued for the regions of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and the ghats of Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara. This alert indicates even more severe weather conditions in these areas. Light to moderate rains are expected to begin in Mumbai on August 15 and continue throughout the weekend.

The IMD has classified the yellow alert as an indication of possible weather conditions that could disrupt daily life for residents. On the same day, the IMD forecasted a generally cloudy sky for Mumbai, with moderate rainfall and potential thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across the city and its suburbs.

The weather data from the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 31.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.9 degrees Celsius on August 13. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory reported similar temperatures, with a high of 31.6 degrees Celsius and a low of 24.9 degrees Celsius.

High tides are also expected, with a peak at 2:26 PM on August 13, measuring 4.48 meters in height. The low tide will occur at 8:35 PM, measuring 0.74 meters. On August 14, a high tide will hit Mumbai’s shores at 3:02 AM with a height of 4.17 meters, followed by a low tide at 8:35 AM at 1.31 meters. Authorities have cautioned residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to exercise caution during these high tide hours, especially given the rain forecast.

With previous weeks’ heavy rains, the water levels in the lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have seen an increase. According to data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that serve the city now stands at 89.21 percent of their total capacity. As of August 13, the total water stock in these reservoirs amounts to 12,91,129 million litres.

The BMC continues to supply drinking water daily from the Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vihar, and Tulsi lakes. As the Independence Day weekend approaches, residents are urged to stay informed about weather conditions and remain vigilant in light of the potential for heavy rainfall and related disruptions.
