Prime Minister Modi Mourns Passing of Former Nigerian Leader Buhari

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82 in London on July 13, 2025. Buhari, who was undergoing medical treatment at a clinic in the British capital, served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 until 2023.
In a heartfelt message posted on X, Modi remembered Buhari’s warm character and his unwavering commitment to enhancing India-Nigeria relations. He stated, “Deeply saddened by the passing of former President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari. I fondly recall our meetings and conversations on various occasions. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering commitment to India-Nigeria friendship stood out.” Modi extended condolences from the 1.4 billion people of India to Buhari’s family and the Nigerian public.
Legacy of Leadership and Accomplishments
Born on December 17, 1942, Muhammadu Buhari had a significant impact on Nigeria’s political landscape, both as a military ruler in the 1980s and as a democratically elected president beginning in 2015. He made history by becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria to defeat a sitting president. Buhari was re-elected in 2019 and completed his second term, peacefully transferring power to his successor, Bola Tinubu, on May 29, 2023.
Buhari’s presidency was marked by a focus on national security, particularly in combating the Boko Haram insurgency in northeastern Nigeria. His administration also emphasized the need for economic diversification and took significant steps to recover embezzled public funds. Under his leadership, Nigeria made notable investments in infrastructure and agricultural reforms.
In recognition of Buhari’s contributions, President Tinubu has ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast across Nigeria as a sign of respect for the former leader.
Buhari’s tenure was not without challenges, as he faced criticism over issues such as economic hardship and security concerns. Nevertheless, his efforts to enhance Nigeria’s global standing, particularly in relations with countries like India, will be remembered as a key part of his legacy.
As the world reflects on Buhari’s life and contributions, his commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians and fostering international partnerships remains a significant aspect of his enduring legacy.
