Run and Walk Clubs Transform Fitness Culture for Gen Z in 2025
Across major urban parks in India, particularly in Nehru Park and Lodhi Garden, a notable shift in fitness culture is emerging. In 2025, running and walking clubs are captivating Gen Z, transforming early morning routines into vibrant social gatherings. These clubs are not just about fitness; they foster community, connection, and a sense of belonging.
Running clubs have become the latest trend among young adults, particularly in bustling cities. With a growing emphasis on social interaction, early risers now look forward to mornings filled with camaraderie and shared fitness goals. The Delhi Run Collective, co-founded by Krishna Lohiya, Shahnil Samantara, and Manraj Singh, exemplifies this shift. Launched in September 2024, the club has grown from a small group to over 150 members participating each Sunday.
A report from the fitness app Strava highlights a significant trend: a 59% increase in global running club participation in the past year. This surge indicates that young people are not only pursuing fitness but are also eager to forge new friendships and create memorable experiences.
Redefining Weekend Mornings
The BhagClub, dubbed as India’s “Spiciest Club,” further highlights this burgeoning movement. Founded by Krishbir Singh and Jyotiraditya Thakur, the club began with modest attendance, attracting just one stranger on its inaugural day. Today, it boasts events that draw over 1,100 participants at a time.
“Running with others definitely pushes me to go further than I usually would on my own,” shared Arush Jennis, a member of BhagClub. The club’s vibrant atmosphere includes post-run gatherings ranging from casual coffee meet-ups to lively events like matcha raves. These gatherings provide not just a reward for physical exertion, but also an opportunity for participants to unwind and socialize.
The enthusiasm for these clubs also reflects a broader cultural shift. Many participants find motivation in the community aspect. As one member noted, “Getting up at 6 am and knowing there are 100 people doing the same thing makes the effort worthwhile.”
From Treadmills to Pavements
Among the emerging clubs is DopaFit, launched by Abheek Arora in late 2024. His motivation stemmed from a personal fitness journey, recognizing the need for community support during workouts. Today, DopaFit engages over 200 participants weekly, offering a diverse range of activities, including childhood games and various sports.
“For years, I was cooped up in my society gym, just waiting for the timer to hit zero,” shared Abhiveer Singh, a DopaFit member. His transition to outdoor running has been transformative, highlighting the invigorating difference between treadmill workouts and the dynamic experience of running outdoors.
As clubs innovate to attract participants, they incorporate nostalgic elements to enhance the fitness experience. “To make fitness attractive and fun, we host ‘sports days’ that bring back the nostalgia of school competitions,” one founder remarked. The emphasis on enjoyment rather than mere exercise has proven effective in engaging more participants.
Walking clubs, such as City Girls Who Walk Delhi, are also gaining traction. Founded by Manisha Kalra, this initiative emphasizes inclusivity and community for women. “Walking is more inclusive than running or gym sessions,” Kalra explained, as she noted the relaxed environment fosters meaningful connections.
In a city where safety concerns often deter women from exercising alone, City Girls Who Walk provides a supportive community. Members engage in conversations while strolling through scenic paths, making the experience enjoyable and comfortable.
The formula seems simple yet effective: combine fitness, social interaction, and a sense of belonging. Whether motivated by the allure of “free coffee” or the chance to meet new people, participants are finding joy in these early morning gatherings.
As these clubs continue to grow, they are reshaping the way young people perceive fitness. Waking up at 6 am in cities like Delhi is no longer a chore, but rather an exciting opportunity to connect, exercise, and create lasting memories.
