Belal Muhammad Backs Tom Aspinall, Urges Him to Ignore Trolls
Belal Muhammad has come to the defense of Tom Aspinall following the backlash he faced after his recent fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321. The match, which took place on October 7, 2023, ended abruptly in the first round due to a severe eye poke, resulting in a no-contest decision. Muhammad emphasized that Aspinall should refrain from engaging with online critics to avoid further negativity.
The fight was highly anticipated, with fans excited to see two of the heavyweight division’s top contenders square off. Unfortunately, in a moment of unintended contact, Gane inadvertently poked Aspinall in the eye, leading to immediate stoppage and controversy. Many fans expressed disappointment, suggesting that Aspinall should have continued despite the injury, which sparked a wave of criticism directed at him on social media.
In response to the backlash, Muhammad took to social media, encouraging Aspinall to disregard the opinions of online trolls. He stated, “He just needs to not care,” highlighting the importance of mental resilience in the face of unwarranted criticism. Muhammad’s comments reflect a growing concern within the MMA community about the treatment of fighters who face unexpected challenges during bouts.
Adding to the discourse, documentary filmmaker Will Harris also voiced his disapproval of the MMA community’s reaction toward Aspinall. In a recent post on X, he lamented the tendency of fans to turn against fighters during difficult moments. This sentiment was echoed by fellow fighter Dustin Poirier, who shared his perspective on the situation. Poirier reminded fans that only Aspinall could truly gauge the severity of his injury and referenced his own experiences of pushing through pain in similar scenarios.
As the MMA community continues to debate the circumstances surrounding UFC 321, Aspinall’s focus will likely shift toward his recovery and future fights. The incident underscores the pressures athletes face, not only in the ring but also in the court of public opinion.
