Lt Col Sanjeev Malik Inspires with Book on Mental Resilience
Lieutenant Colonel Sanjeev Malik, a member of the Armed Forces Medical Corps, has recently published a book titled The Graphene Mentality – In the Age of Distraction: Build Mental Strength to Dream, Dare and Deliver. The book was officially launched at an event held at Delhi’s R&R Hospital, where it was presented by Surgeon Vice-Admiral Arti Sarin, the Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS).
During the launch, Vice-Admiral Sarin praised the book for its insightful examination of the human spirit’s strength and resilience, qualities that are essential in today’s rapidly changing environment. She commended Lt Col Malik’s effort as an “inspiring work” and expressed hope that it would motivate readers toward positivity and perseverance.
In a conversation with The Tribune, Lt Col Malik revealed that the concept for his book was inspired by both his personal experiences and the remarkable properties of graphene, a material known for its strength and flexibility. The idea first took shape during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a time when many people faced significant challenges. He aimed to encourage young individuals to dream big and pursue their goals tenaciously.
Reflecting on his own journey, Lt Col Malik recounted a pivotal moment during his selection for the Para Special Forces. He faced the daunting task of completing a 40-kilometre run while carrying a 25-kilogram backpack, despite sustaining a ligament tear just a week prior. His instructor had advised him to withdraw, warning that continuing could jeopardize his military career. Instead, he utilized ice and heat therapy, took painkillers, and pushed through the pain, driven by his desire to earn the prestigious maroon beret. “That was the ‘graphene mentality’ in action,” he noted. Ultimately, he finished first and was accepted into the elite force.
In addition to his military accomplishments, Lt Col Malik has excelled in sports. At the World Medical and Health Games 2023 in Colombia, he triumphed in all five events he entered — the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, cross-country, and 5000m — despite competing with a hairline ankle fracture and enduring 48 hours of sleep deprivation during travel. His exceptional performance set a world record for the games, which have been held since 1978, and even earned him a mention as a trivia question on the popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Lt Col Malik’s educational background includes attending Sainik School, Kunjpura, and obtaining his MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune. He was commissioned into the Army as a Lieutenant in 2010. His family has a proud military legacy; his father is a retired Nayak from the Army.
Through his book and achievements, Lt Col Sanjeev Malik exemplifies the spirit of resilience and determination, offering a powerful message that echoes far beyond the confines of military life.
