Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is currently in an “extremely critical” condition, according to her personal physician. Zia, aged 80, has been hospitalized at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka since November 23, 2023, due to multiple health complications.

Her situation has worsened, leading to the decision on December 11 to place her on “ventilator support” to alleviate strain on her lungs and other vital organs. Dr. AZM Zahid, who is overseeing her treatment, addressed the media shortly after midnight on Saturday, stating, “It cannot be said that her condition has improved. She is passing through an extremely critical phase.” He urged the public to pray for her recovery, emphasizing the seriousness of her health status.

Tarique Rahman, Zia’s son and acting chairperson of the BNP, visited the hospital for over two hours, leaving shortly before midnight. The family remains closely involved in her care, with her daughter-in-law, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, actively participating in the treatment process alongside both local and international medical professionals.

Medical Condition and Future Treatment Options

The BNP has indicated a preference for Zia to receive advanced medical treatment abroad. However, her current health condition does not permit air travel, necessitating that her treatment continue within Bangladesh. Dr. Zahid expressed cautious hope, stating, “If, by Allah’s mercy, she can get through this critical period, we may hear something positive.”

The political landscape in Bangladesh is closely monitoring Zia’s health situation, as she has been a significant figure in the country’s politics for decades. Her prolonged illness has raised concerns among her supporters and political allies, who are advocating for her swift recovery.

As Zia remains under critical care, the nation watches closely, reflecting on her legacy and the potential impact of her health on the BNP and Bangladesh’s political future.
