Israeli Airstrike Targets Hezbollah Commander in Beirut
An Israeli airstrike has targeted Haytham Ali Tabatabai, a senior commander in Hezbollah and the group’s second-in-command, in Beirut. The attack was confirmed by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Tabatabai is recognized as Hezbollah’s de facto chief of staff and holds significant influence within the organization, second only to the group’s secretary general, Naim Qassem.
As of now, it remains unclear whether Tabatabai survived the strike. Previously, the United States had offered a reward of $5 million for information leading to his capture. Tabatabai has a history of commanding Hezbollah’s special forces, particularly in conflict zones such as Syria and Yemen.
Increasing tensions have prompted Israel to intensify its military operations against Hezbollah. This escalation comes as the Iran-backed group attempts to reorganize and strengthen its position following the ceasefire that took effect on November 27, 2024. The ceasefire agreement requires Hezbollah to withdraw its armed forces from southern Lebanon, a stipulation rooted in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War. According to this resolution, Hezbollah is prohibited from conducting military operations south of the Litani River.
The implications of this strike could be significant, affecting both the operational capabilities of Hezbollah and the broader regional security dynamics. Observers will be closely monitoring the situation as further developments unfold in the wake of this targeted attack.
