Israel Launches Airstrikes in Gaza, Killing Six Amid Peace Efforts
Israeli forces conducted airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, as reported by local authorities. This escalation occurred just hours after a call from US President Donald Trump urging Israel to cease its military operations. The strikes reportedly killed four people in Gaza City, while two others were killed in Khan Younis, located in the southern part of the territory.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s office indicated that the country was preparing for the “immediate implementation” of the first stage of Trump’s proposed 20-point peace plan, which includes the release of hostages held by Hamas. Despite this announcement, Israeli media later reported that the government had directed the military to reduce its offensive operations in Gaza. However, the Israeli military chief of staff confirmed that forces had been instructed to increase their readiness for the plan’s implementation, without explicitly mentioning any reduction in military actions.
Hamas, which governs Gaza, reacted positively to Trump’s initiative, especially ahead of a deadline set for Sunday. The group warned of “grave consequences” if they did not comply with the terms of the proposed plan. President Trump, who has positioned himself as a potential mediator in the Middle East conflict, expressed optimism on Friday, stating that he believed Hamas was prepared for a long-term resolution. “Based on the statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE,” Trump noted on Truth Social, urging Israel to halt its bombings in order to facilitate the safe release of hostages.
Trump’s involvement in the conflict has drawn significant attention, as the violence has continued for nearly two years, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and escalating international criticism of Israeli actions. In response, Netanyahu‘s office reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to collaborating closely with the United States. “Israel will continue to work in full cooperation with the President and his team to end the war in accordance with the principles set out by Israel, which align with President Trump’s vision,” the statement asserted.
Domestically, Netanyahu faces growing pressure from families of Israeli hostages who have called for immediate negotiations for their return. Public discontent has increased due to the war’s prolonged duration and its human cost. Meanwhile, hardline factions within Netanyahu’s coalition maintain that military pressure must be sustained.
The current conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched a deadly attack against southern Israel, leading to approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 hostages, according to Israeli sources. Israel claims that 48 hostages remain in captivity, with 20 still alive. In retaliation, Israeli forces initiated a large-scale military campaign in Gaza that has reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 66,000 individuals, the majority of whom are civilians, as per local health authorities. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has deepened, characterized by extensive destruction and severe aid restrictions that have led to famine in certain areas.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the situation remains precarious, with the potential for further escalation in hostilities.
