India Kicks Off Asia Cup 2025 on Dhyan Chand’s Legacy
India’s men’s hockey team launches its Asia Cup 2025 campaign in Rajgir, Bihar, on August 29, coinciding with the birth anniversary of legendary player Dhyan Chand. The team aims to clinch the continental title, which would secure them direct qualification for the World Cup next year.
The tournament, celebrated on National Sports Day, honours Dhyan Chand, known as the “Wizard of Hockey.” His remarkable skills led India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. This year, the Indian team seeks to draw inspiration from his legacy as they strive for a fourth Asia Cup title, last won in 2017.
India’s journey in the tournament has become somewhat less challenging due to the withdrawal of archrival Pakistan, which cited security concerns. The Asia Cup is a prestigious event in continental hockey, with South Korea holding the record for the most titles at five, while India follows with three. In the previous edition, India finished in third place after a semi-final match against South Korea, who advanced on goal difference.
India has been placed in Pool A alongside China, Japan, and Kazakhstan. They will open their campaign against China on August 29, followed by matches against Japan on August 31 and Kazakhstan on September 1. Pool B consists of South Korea, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the Super 4 stage, where the winner will earn an automatic berth in the World Cup.
Ranked seventh in the world, India enters the tournament with hopes of overcoming a disappointing performance during the Pro League European leg. The team is buoyed by the support of local fans, which could play a crucial role in their success.
Coach Craig Fulton expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, stating, “Our preparation has been thorough. The camp in Perth gave us the right intensity with competitive matches that sharpened our readiness. Our goal is clear: win the Asia Cup and secure World Cup qualification.”
Captain Harmanpreet Singh echoed his coach’s sentiments, noting the value of their recent training camp and tour in Australia. “We’ve prepared well as a team. Every opponent is strong, and our mindset is to play smartly, maintain structure, and stay consistent,” he said.
As the tournament unfolds, the Indian team will look to honour Dhyan Chand’s legacy by showcasing their skills and determination on the field. With high ambitions and a strong preparation behind them, they are set to embark on a crucial journey in the Asia Cup 2025.
