China Warns US Against Interference in Taiwan and South China Sea

China’s Defence Minister, Dong Jun, issued a strong warning to the United States regarding its involvement in issues related to Taiwan and the South China Sea during a video call with his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, on March 13, 2024. Jun asserted that any attempts by Washington to “contain, deter, or interfere” with Beijing’s activities would ultimately be futile, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
During the discussion, Jun emphasized China’s stance on Taiwan, which it views as a part of its territory. He stated, “Any attempt or interference to use force to support independence or use Taiwan to contain China will be thwarted.” This statement underscores Beijing’s unwavering position on its territorial claims and its willingness to employ military force if necessary. In contrast, the United States has positioned itself as Taiwan’s primary arms supplier and has committed to its defense.
South China Sea Tensions
The conversation also touched on the contentious issue of the South China Sea, where Dong condemned what he described as “infringement and provocation” by certain countries. He remarked, “We must oppose the deliberate incitement of chaos by countries outside the region.” China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, a claim that overlaps with those of several Southeast Asian nations. The US frequently conducts “freedom of navigation” operations in these waters, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing.
Dong stressed the need for a balanced military relationship, advocating for mutual respect between the two nations. “We must build an equal, respectful, peacefully coexistent, stable and positive military-to-military relationship,” he said, highlighting the importance of respecting each other’s core interests.
In response, the Pentagon characterized the talks as “candid and constructive.” According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, Secretary Hegseth made it clear that the United States does not seek conflict with China. “The US is not pursuing regime change or strangulation of the People’s Republic of China,” he stated. Nevertheless, Parnell reiterated that the US has significant interests in the Asia-Pacific region, which it intends to protect resolutely.
The discussions reflect ongoing tensions between the US and China, particularly in the context of military posturing in Asia. Both nations face the challenge of navigating their complex relationship while addressing mutual concerns over regional stability and security. As the situation evolves, the commitment to dialogue will be crucial in mitigating potential conflicts.
