Chicago Officials Challenge Trump’s National Guard Deployment

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to prevent the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to the city. This legal action was taken on March 15, 2024, following President Trump’s approval of the troop dispatch, which he characterized as a necessary measure to combat escalating crime.

The lawsuit claims that the deployment represents an unlawful and unconstitutional use of military force against civilians. It argues that the American public should not feel threatened by what they describe as a military occupation orchestrated by federal authorities. “Illinois is taking the Trump administration to court for their unlawful and unconstitutional deployment of military troops to our state,” Pritzker stated, expressing his concern over what he views as an abuse of power targeting cities governed by Democrats.

In addition to challenging the troop deployment, the lawsuit accuses the Trump administration, along with several federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), of fostering a climate of intimidation against peaceful protesters and journalists. The legal document highlights incidents where federal agents allegedly used tear gas and pepper spray against demonstrators near an ICE detention facility in Broadview, Illinois.

Mayor Johnson Takes Action Against ICE

In a related development, Mayor Johnson signed an executive order on the same day, prohibiting ICE and other federal agencies from utilizing city property for civil immigration enforcement activities. This order restricts federal authorities from using city-owned facilities, including parking lots and vacant lots, as staging areas for enforcement operations.

“Our school parking lots are not for ICE to load their weapons. They are for Chicagoans who drop their kids off to learn,” Johnson remarked during the announcement. He emphasized that libraries and parks should serve the community, not federal enforcement operations.

Johnson expressed grave concerns over what he described as an “unaccountable” presence of heavily armed federal agents in the city, stating, “We have a rogue, reckless group of heavily armed, masked individuals roaming throughout our city that are not accountable to the people of Chicago. Their actions put all Chicagoans at risk.”

Federal Troop Deployment Sparks Controversy

The Trump administration has portrayed Chicago as a “war zone” to justify the military intervention, facing strong backlash from local leaders. Governor Pritzker described the situation as “Trump’s invasion,” asserting that there was no legitimate reason for federal troops to enter Illinois without prior coordination with local authorities.

Tensions escalated before the troop deployment when U.S. Border Patrol agents shot an armed woman during confrontations with protesters. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that no officers sustained serious injuries despite the chaotic scenes involving vehicles being rammed by protesters attempting to block ICE agents.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a U.S. District Court judge in Portland issued a temporary injunction against a similar deployment of federal troops, ruling that the White House failed to provide adequate justification for military intervention. Judge Karin Immergut asserted, “This is a nation of constitutional law, not martial law.”
