Cal Raleigh Hits 50th Home Run, Sets MLB Switch-Hitting Record

Seattle Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh achieved a significant milestone on September 25, 2023, hitting his 50th home run during a game against the San Diego Padres. In the first inning, with one out and the bases empty, Raleigh connected on a solo shot off pitcher JP Sears, marking a historic moment in Major League Baseball (MLB).
Raleigh Joins Elite Company
This remarkable achievement makes Raleigh only the second switch hitter in MLB history to reach the 50-homer mark in a single season, a feat previously accomplished by Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle. The 28-year-old’s home run also adds to his recent accomplishment of setting the single-season record for most home runs by a primary catcher. He surpassed Salvador Perez‘s record of 48 home runs, which he set while playing for the Kansas City Royals in 2021.
While Raleigh served as the Mariners’ designated hitter in this game, most of his home runs this season have come while he was catching. ESPN reported that he is the first player ever to hit at least 20 home runs from both sides of the plate in a single season, highlighting his unique power and versatility.
Chasing the Home Run Crown
Entering the game, Raleigh held a four-home run lead in the race for MLB’s home run title, ahead of Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both competitors, however, were unable to add to their totals on the same night. With every swing, Raleigh is not only solidifying his status as one of baseball’s most potent hitters but also continuing to etch his name into the sport’s record books.
Raleigh’s journey this season has been nothing short of remarkable, and his achievements have captivated fans and sports analysts alike. With the postseason approaching, his contributions will be crucial for the Mariners as they aim for playoff success.
