Assam Orders 15 Declared Foreigners to Leave by December 19
The Nagaon district administration in Assam has issued a directive requiring 15 individuals, classified as foreigners by a tribunal, to exit both the state and India by December 19, 2023. The affected individuals, which include six women, have been identified as having entered the country illegally from Bangladesh.
On December 17, District Commissioner Devashish Sarma mandated that these individuals must leave within 24 hours of receiving the official order. This directive was delivered to them on December 18, 2023. The tribunal ruling categorized each of these individuals as “foreigners” at different times based on their residency status.
Details of the Order
The official order specifies that the individuals must vacate the territory of Assam and India via designated routes including Dhubri, Sribhumi, and South Salmara-Mankachar. The communication also warns that failure to comply would compel the government to take necessary actions for their removal from the region.
The 15 individuals listed in the order include: Anowara Begum, Asha Khatun, Hussain Ali, Rahim Sheikh, Burek Ali, Idris Ali, Nazrul Islam, Jahara Khatun, Abdul Aziz, Aheda Khatun, Azufa Khatun, Fazila Khatun, Rustom Ali, Anowar Khan, and Taher Ali.
The situation highlights ongoing issues surrounding immigration and residency in Assam, particularly concerning individuals from Bangladesh. The Assam government has previously faced scrutiny regarding its handling of such cases, as the region grapples with complex demographic and socio-political dynamics.
Authorities continue to reinforce their commitment to maintaining the integrity of national borders, as outlined in the directive. The actions taken by the Nagaon district administration reflect a broader governmental strategy aimed at addressing illegal immigration and ensuring compliance with legal residency protocols in India.
