The growing popularity of Labubu dolls in China has led to the emergence of a new profession: toy doctors. These specialists focus on repairing and maintaining the plush toys, which have become highly collectible. This trend has created an unexpected market, allowing professionals to capitalize on the rising demand for Labubu dolls.

According to the South China Morning Post, a Shanghai-based toy doctor known as Heartman recently experienced an overwhelming demand for his services. In just one month, he repaired approximately 100 Labubu dolls, necessitating the involvement of his wife and a move to a larger studio to manage the workload. Repair costs are relatively low, at around 10% of the original purchase price, making it an attractive option for collectors looking to preserve their toys.

The Labubu craze has significantly impacted the toy repair market, which previously focused on vintage toys. The cost of an ordinary Labubu doll is around ₹1,200, while rare versions can fetch several thousand rupees in China’s second-hand market. Since their introduction in 2019, the dolls have gained immense popularity, particularly after the endorsement from Blackpink member Lisa. This endorsement led to a substantial boost in sales, with Pop Mart’s series ‘The Monsters’ experiencing a remarkable revenue increase of 726.6%, reaching ₹3,677 crore.

The origin of Labubu dolls can be traced back to Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, who created the characters as part of The Monsters family. The collaboration between Lung and Chinese toy manufacturer Pop Mart has resulted in a unique line of plush toys that resonate with collectors and fans alike.

As the trend continues to grow, toy doctors like Heartman are finding new opportunities in a field that has expanded beyond traditional toy repairs. The combination of nostalgia, collectibility, and a thriving repair market positions Labubu dolls as a significant cultural phenomenon in China, highlighting the evolving nature of consumer interests and the professions they inspire.

With the continued rise in popularity, the role of toy doctors is likely to grow further, ensuring that these cherished collectibles remain in good condition for years to come.
