India and Philippines Strengthen Ties with Strategic Partnership

The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, welcomed Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., the President of the Republic of the Philippines, during his first State visit to India on March 5, 2024. The meeting took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Murmu also hosted a banquet in honour of her guest.
In her remarks, President Murmu highlighted the longstanding friendship between India and the Philippines, rooted in civilizational contacts and common values. She emphasized the significance of their comprehensive cooperation, which includes sustained high-level engagement, vibrant trade relations, and robust defence and security collaboration, particularly in the maritime domain.
The elevation of bilateral ties to a “Strategic Partnership” was a central theme of their discussions. President Murmu noted that this advancement will enhance multifaceted cooperation, benefiting both countries and contributing to regional peace, stability, and prosperity. She remarked, “The India-Philippines partnership is not only beneficial for the people of our two countries, but it also serves as an anchor for peace in the region.”
The President acknowledged the Philippines’ vital role in India’s Act East Policy, its MAHASAGAR Vision, and the broader Indo-Pacific strategy. She extended her best wishes for the Philippines as it prepares to assume the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2024.
In the context of their discussions, President Murmu expressed gratitude for the Philippines’ strong condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. She appreciated the solidarity shown by the Philippine government in supporting India’s fight against terrorism.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to development cooperation, particularly through the implementation of Quick Impact Projects aimed at improving the daily lives of local communities. They recognized shared interests in the maritime domain, especially regarding humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and search and rescue operations.
As the two nations celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, both leaders agreed that this visit marks a significant step toward building a stronger partnership. With a focus on mutual respect and benefit, India and the Philippines are poised to deepen their collaboration in various sectors, further solidifying their role as key partners in the region.
