Delhi Faces Record Cold as Temperatures Plunge to 3°C
New Delhi has experienced a significant drop in temperatures, with readings hitting levels not seen in over a decade. The Palam area recorded a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest day in 13 years. Ayanagar was even colder, registering 2.9 degrees Celsius, while the Ridge area reported 3.7 degrees Celsius. This cold wave has prompted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for the next two days, warning residents to prepare for continued low temperatures.
The drop in temperature has left many residents feeling the chill, with Palam’s latest figures showing a departure of 4 degrees below the normal level for this time of year. The previous record low for Palam was 2.6 degrees Celsius, set on January 7, 2013. Historically, the lowest recorded temperature in the area was -2.2 degrees Celsius on January 11, 1967.
Cold Wave Conditions Expected to Persist
Forecasters predict that the cold wave will continue until Tuesday, with temperatures potentially dropping further in various parts of the city. The IMD has classified the current weather conditions as a cold wave, indicating that minimum temperatures have fallen between 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal. This classification has been confirmed by the current readings across Delhi.
Residents across the capital have also reported a significant chill, with Ayanagar being noted as the coldest area at 2.9 degrees Celsius, which is 4.2 degrees below normal. Lodhi Road recorded a minimum of 4.6 degrees Celsius, which is 1.4 degrees below the average for this time of year. The IMD’s yellow alert serves as a caution for residents, advising them to stay indoors when possible and take necessary precautions.
Health Precautions Advised Amid Cold Conditions
In light of the severe weather, medical professionals are urging vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and patients, to take extra care. Recommendations include wearing warm clothing, avoiding unnecessary travel during the early morning and evening hours, and paying close attention to overall health.
Additionally, residents should be aware of the potential for dense fog, which can result in low visibility and possible traffic disruptions. Authorities emphasize the importance of being prepared for the ongoing cold wave and the associated health risks.
As the situation develops, local news outlets like Zee News will continue to provide updates on the weather and its impact on daily life in New Delhi.
