Venkatesh Prasad Unveils Manifesto to Revive Chinnaswamy Stadium

Former Indian cricketer Venkatesh Prasad has taken a significant step towards revitalizing cricket at the historic Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. On Wednesday, he unveiled a manifesto aimed at restoring the stadium’s glory and ensuring it remains a key venue for international cricket. This announcement comes in the wake of a tragic incident on June 4, 2023, when a stampede during a match resulted in the deaths of 11 fans. Since that day, no games have been played at the stadium, raising concerns about the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup matches scheduled for next month.

During a press conference following the manifesto launch, Prasad emphasized the need for proactive collaboration with the state government to facilitate the return of matches to the stadium. He stated, “That’s something that shouldn’t have happened, honestly. We have to ensure that matches are played in Chinnaswamy Stadium as soon as possible.” The former fast bowler hinted that his panel will consist of 16 members but refrained from disclosing their names at this time.

The elections for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) are anticipated to take place in October or November, as the current administration, led by Raghuram Bhat, completes its three-year term on September 30. Prasad expressed a strong desire to restore the stadium’s international status, noting, “We need to bring back the lost glory as far as the stadium is concerned. It’s such an iconic venue that has been standing for the last 50 years.”

Plans for a Smart Stadium and Enhanced Capacity

Prasad and fellow panelist Vinay Mruthyunjaya are aware of the challenges they will face if elected. Their manifesto outlines ambitious plans to refurbish the Chinnaswamy Stadium, transforming it into a modern smart stadium equipped with cutting-edge facilities. Mruthyunjaya highlighted the intention to increase the venue’s capacity from approximately 35,000 to at least 50,000 spectators. “There will be no compromise as far as the safety of the fans or the spectators is concerned,” he assured.

The need for a new world-class stadium in Mysuru was also mentioned, indicating the panel’s commitment to expanding cricket infrastructure within the state. Prasad added, “We need to work on that along with architects. We cannot take it to 80,000 or something like that, but maybe up to 50,000.”

Both Prasad and Mruthyunjaya bring administrative experience from their previous roles as vice-president and treasurer, respectively, under the leadership of former cricketers Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath. When asked about his return to administration after focusing on coaching and media, Prasad stated, “Vinay and Santosh (Menon) came to me regarding the upcoming elections and discussed what we can do (to restore cricket) if we come back to power.”

Revival of Women’s Cricket and Upcoming Matches

Alongside reviving men’s cricket, Prasad’s manifesto also addresses the need to enhance women’s cricket in Karnataka. Former India women’s captain Shanta Rangaswamy attended the launch and stressed the importance of structured women’s leagues. She remarked, “We want to launch structured leagues equivalent to men’s tournaments for all age groups.”

As the press conference concluded, Prasad was asked about India’s forthcoming match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. He noted that decisions regarding bilateral matches would ultimately be made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stating, “Whatever stand they take, I’m sure they’re taking it in the interest of the citizens of the country.”

The future of cricket at Chinnaswamy Stadium lies in the hands of its administration, and Prasad’s manifesto marks the beginning of a potential new era for the venue and its fans.
