The New York Liberty secured a spot in the postseason on March 5, 2024, despite suffering a disappointing loss to the Golden State Valkyries, with a final score of 66-58. The Liberty’s playoff berth was confirmed not through their performance, but rather due to the Phoenix Mercury’s victory over the Indiana Fever earlier in the day. Liberty coach Sandy Brondello expressed mixed feelings, stating, “We just lost the game. Yeah, we’re in the playoffs, but we still lost the game.”

The Liberty entered the matchup against the Valkyries hoping to change their recent fortunes. They had previously missed three opportunities to clinch a playoff spot due to both their own defeats and unfavorable game results elsewhere. Despite these setbacks, the team focused on their performance rather than the implications of their playoff status.

Since the start of the season, the Liberty have struggled to find their rhythm, winning only two of their last six games. With just three regular-season games remaining, the team faces the challenge of regaining health and building chemistry as they aim to defend their title from the previous season.

Challenges in the Game Against the Valkyries

The Liberty began the game with a promising start, building a four-point lead by the end of the first quarter. However, they faltered significantly in the second quarter, being outscored 26-8. During this stretch, the Liberty committed five turnovers and shot just 16.7% from beyond the arc, which allowed the Valkyries to establish a commanding 12-point lead by halftime.

Despite entering the game with the league’s best three-point defense, the Liberty struggled to contain the Valkyries’ offense. Kate Martin found her shooting touch, hitting the team’s first three 3-point attempts in the second quarter. This performance highlighted the inconsistency that has plagued the Liberty throughout the season, as noted by star player Breanna Stewart. She remarked, “It’s the story of our season right now. When we have to take the ball out of the net, we struggle.”

The Liberty’s roster has been heavily impacted by injuries, missing key players such as Sabrina Ionescu, who was sidelined for a third consecutive game due to a left big toe injury, and Nyara Sabally. The team has fielded 16 different starting lineups this season and has only had its full roster available for the first two games. Brondello acknowledged the impact of these injuries, stating, “We haven’t lived up to our expectations, and yes, obviously, injuries have been a part of that.”

Looking Ahead

As the playoffs approach, the Liberty must address their inconsistencies and focus on improving their overall performance. Brondello expressed confidence in her team, particularly with the potential return of Ionescu. “I feel good about this team, but we need to win now,” she emphasized.

With the postseason on the horizon, the Liberty aim to regain their form and make a strong push for another championship run. As they navigate the final stretch of the regular season, the focus will be on building cohesion and executing their game plan effectively. The upcoming games will be critical as they prepare for the challenges that lie ahead in the playoffs.
