Jets GM Expects Justin Fields to Evolve into Productive Quarterback
New York Jets General Manager Darren Mougey expressed confidence in quarterback Justin Fields, predicting that he can follow in the footsteps of former high draft picks Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield. Mougey noted that while progress may take time, he has observed positive developments during training camp.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since the draft in April, Mougey stated, “I do believe Justin can be one of those guys.” He acknowledged the challenges Fields faces, having transitioned to three different teams in as many years, each with a new offensive coordinator. “It does take time,” he added. “But I like where he’s at and I look forward to watching the progress.”
Fields’ Contract and Team Dynamics
The Jets signed Fields to a two-year contract worth $40 million after parting ways with Aaron Rodgers. Fields, who was drafted 11th overall by the Chicago Bears in 2021, recently completed a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Jets are set to face the Steelers in their season opener, marking Rodgers’ return to MetLife Stadium.
This season presents a unique challenge for Fields, as he navigates his fourth different offensive system in five years. His performance during the preseason revealed some growing pains, as he completed only 4 of 9 passes for 46 yards, with no throws exceeding nine air yards. Nevertheless, he demonstrated his agility with a 13-yard touchdown run, escaping a collapsing pocket.
Mougey identified Fields’ most significant improvement as his mastery of “the operation” of the offense. “I’ve seen him improve every day—specifically, this past week,” he remarked. “We’ve really seen good rhythm out at practice with the offense—a balanced attack, some runs, some pass, but just the overall operation, the command, his leadership. Seeing that growth has been really good.”
Coaching Support and Offensive Strategy
Fields has been named one of five captains for the season, signaling the trust and support he has garnered from the coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand emphasized Fields’ understanding of the dropback passing concepts, stating, “He understands what we’re trying to do. He understands what we’re trying to attack, where the ball needs to go, and I think, every day we’re showing progress from Justin.”
While Garrett Wilson stands out as a proven threat in the receiving corps, the Jets face challenges in their supporting cast. The team released Davante Adams for salary cap reasons, replacing him with veteran Josh Reynolds. The Jets are optimistic that second-round draft pick Mason Taylor can contribute significantly to the passing game.
Mougey remains unfazed by the potential limitations of the offensive lineup. “I feel really good about the pieces around him,” he concluded, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to developing Fields into a successful quarterback.
