Jannik Sinner secured his place in the semifinals of the US Open by defeating fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti with a commanding score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. The match, held on the evening of August 30, 2023, marked the first all-Italian quarterfinal in men’s major history. As the tournament’s top seed, Sinner continued his impressive title defense and will face No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals.

This victory represents Sinner’s fifth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal appearance. A win on Friday would allow him to reach the finals of all four major tournaments in a single year. Remarkably, Sinner has achieved 26 straight wins in Grand Slam events on hard courts, including his recent triumphs at both the Australian Open and last year’s US Open.

Sinner expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “It was a great performance. Very solid, especially starting very, very well.” He completed the match in just two hours, with the first set taking only 27 minutes. Sinner faced seven break points but managed to fend off each one, showcasing his resilience. In total, he has dropped only 38 games throughout the tournament, the second-fewest by a male player reaching the US Open semifinals since 2020.

In terms of service, Sinner has been nearly flawless, winning 31 consecutive service games and securing 42 of 46 points on his first serve, which accounts for an impressive 91% success rate. His dominance on the court was evident as he quickly built a lead against Musetti, who struggled to find his rhythm. After falling behind 5-0 in the first set, Musetti could only muster nine points compared to Sinner’s 25.

Musetti, who reached the semifinals at the French Open earlier this year and at Wimbledon in 2024, aimed to advance further in the US Open but could not convert his opportunities. Despite increasing his chances against Sinner’s serve as the match progressed, he was unable to secure a break that might have shifted the momentum.

Reflecting on their friendship, Sinner noted, “We have to take the friendship away for the match, and obviously when we shake hands, everything’s fine.” As the tournament heads into its final stages, all eyes will be on Sinner as he seeks to defend his title against Auger-Aliassime, who recently pulled off an upset against No. 8 seed Alex De Minaur in a hard-fought match that concluded with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4).
