Falcons Rally to Upset Buccaneers in Thrilling 29-28 Finish
The Atlanta Falcons staged an impressive comeback on Thursday night, defeating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 29-28 at Raymond James Stadium. Trailing by 14 points in the third quarter, the Falcons rallied to secure a crucial victory, thanks in part to a last-second 43-yard field goal from kicker Zane Gonzalez.
This win marked a significant turnaround for the Falcons, who had struggled in recent weeks. Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins delivered a standout performance, completing 30 of 44 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Bijan Robinson added 93 rushing yards on 19 carries, along with 82 receiving yards on eight catches. The highlight of the night came from tight end Kyle Pitts, who recorded 11 receptions for 166 yards and three touchdowns.
Tampa Bay faced a setback in their pursuit of the NFC South title. The Buccaneers fell to a 7-7 record and are now half a game behind the Carolina Panthers. After starting the season strong at 5-1, the Buccaneers have struggled, winning only once in their last six games. The pressure is mounting as they aim to secure a playoff spot with just three games remaining in the regular season.
Game Highlights and Key Performances
Cousins showcased his talent against the Buccaneers, continuing a trend of strong performances against this division rival. In the first half alone, he threw for over 150 yards and two touchdowns, marking the third consecutive game in which he has excelled against Tampa Bay.
For the Falcons, Pitts’ performance was particularly noteworthy. His 166 receiving yards marked his first 100-yard game since his rookie season in 2021. This achievement was vital for the Falcons, especially in light of Drake London‘s absence due to a knee injury. Notably, it was the first time since Calvin Ridley in 2018 that a Falcons player surpassed 100 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns in a single half.
Despite their success, the Falcons faced challenges with penalties. The team committed 19 penalties, the most in franchise history and the highest for any team this season. Coach Raheem Morris expressed the need for a cleaner operation in the final weeks of the season, a task made difficult by the team’s ongoing struggles.
Buccaneers’ Dismay and Future Outlook
The emotional toll of the game’s outcome was evident among the Buccaneers players. Wide receiver Mike Evans, returning from a broken collarbone, exited the field before the game concluded, reflecting the team’s frustration. The home crowd’s displeasure was palpable, with loud boos resonating long after the final whistle.
Looking ahead, the Buccaneers’ schedule poses further challenges. If the Panthers win against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Tampa Bay’s chances of clinching the NFC South could drop to just 35%, according to ESPN Research. Conversely, a loss for Carolina would leave the Buccaneers with a 76% chance of winning the division.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled under pressure throughout the game, facing a defensive onslaught from the Falcons. He was pressured on 43% of his dropbacks, a season-high rate, and was sacked five times. Despite some success with deep passes, including six completions of 15 yards or more, Mayfield missed several opportunities to capitalize on scoring chances.
The turning point occurred late in the game when Falcons linebacker Dee Alford intercepted a pass intended for Evans, setting up a critical touchdown that ultimately shifted momentum in favor of Atlanta.
As the Buccaneers prepare for their next matchup against the Panthers, the team’s path to the playoffs remains uncertain. They must regroup quickly to make a push for the division title in the final weeks of the season.
