DeSean Jackson Embraces Coaching Journey After NFL Retirement

Former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson has shared how Deion Sanders played a pivotal role in helping him rediscover his purpose after retiring from professional football. Following a 15-year career in the NFL, Jackson faced the common struggle many athletes encounter—finding direction after the structured life of a professional athlete.

During a recent fishing trip with Sanders in Dallas, Jackson revealed his feelings of aimlessness after retiring in 2022. He expressed, “I feel like after I retired, I kind of didn’t really have a purpose. But I was trying to find my purpose. Played football all these years, all my life.” This loss of identity is a challenge faced by many athletes as they transition to life beyond sports.

After taking a year to reflect on his next steps, Jackson realized he could not remain inactive. “I was like, man, let me sit down for a year and chill out. And then after that year, I was like, man, I got to get my butt up and off that couch and figure it out,” he said. Coaching soon became a calling for him.

In 2024, Jackson took on the role of offensive coordinator at Woodrow High School in Long Beach, California. His experiences there led him to accept the head coaching position at Delaware State University, a historically Black college and university (HBCU). Jackson credits Sanders’ coaching success at Jackson State as influential in his decision to pursue coaching, stating, “Coach Prime has been tremendous… and challenging as well, because everything I’m going through, he already went through it.”

Jackson’s path mirrors Sanders’, who transitioned from player to coach and has made significant strides in elevating HBCU football. As Jackson begins his tenure at Delaware State, he faces the challenge of revitalizing a program that has struggled recently, recording a dismal 2-21 record over the past two seasons.
