Dak Prescott Emerges as Strong MVP Contender in 2025 NFL Season

As the 2025 NFL season unfolds, the MVP race has taken an unexpected turn. Rather than the usual frontrunners like Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson, two seasoned quarterbacks, Dak Prescott and Baker Mayfield, are making compelling cases for the prestigious award. Despite the Dallas Cowboys’ uneven start with a record of 2-2-1, Prescott’s individual performance stands out, prompting analysts to take notice.

Prescott has completed over 71% of his passes, accumulating 1,356 yards, 10 touchdowns, and just three interceptions. Notably, he has managed these impressive statistics while contending with a beleaguered offensive line and missing his top two receivers, CeeDee Lamb and KaVontae Turpin. In a recent podcast, NFL analyst Greg Olsen highlighted Prescott’s resilience, stating, “Is he in the conversation? Without question. He’s in the two or three,” referring to the MVP discussions.

Overcoming Adversity

Olsen’s remarks came during an episode of “Bussin’ With The Boys,” where he emphasized Prescott’s ability to thrive under challenging conditions. He pointed out a remarkable game against the New York Jets, where Prescott led the Cowboys to a 37-22 victory despite facing the league’s worst defense and missing critical players. “He went into that game on the road with the worst defense in football… missing four starting offensive linemen and CeeDee Lamb… and it was 30–3 in the fourth quarter. That’s pretty impressive,” Olsen noted.

In that game, Prescott threw four touchdown passes without interceptions and achieved a passer rating of 127.4. This performance marked his 12th career game with four touchdown passes, extending his franchise record. Olsen underscored that Prescott has consistently excelled, regardless of the circumstances surrounding him.

Former NFL player and podcast host Taylor Lewan echoed Olsen’s sentiments, expressing astonishment at Prescott’s ability to keep the Cowboys competitive. He remarked on the difficulty of maintaining performance levels when relying on backups and practice squad players. “You keep maybe nine linemen on your roster, so you’re plucking guys from practice squads… To have your quarterback play that well? I’m blown away by him,” Lewan stated.

The Impact on the Cowboys’ Season

Both analysts concluded that the success of the Cowboys largely depends on Prescott’s consistency. They noted that as long as he maintains his high level of play, the MVP conversation will continue to gain momentum. Yet, they also recognized the fragile nature of the Cowboys’ situation—should Prescott falter, the team could struggle significantly.

Olsen and Lewan acknowledged that the narrative surrounding Prescott will shift dramatically following any losses, especially given the current injury issues plaguing the team. Nevertheless, in a season where other star quarterbacks have shown vulnerabilities, Prescott’s ability to deliver under pressure sets him apart.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Dak Prescott to see if he can not only lead the Cowboys to success but also solidify his standing as a genuine MVP contender in the 2025 NFL season.
